Mission: Robotics, SFC’s inaugural team of 4th grade girls competed against more than 60 teams at the FIRST LEGO League So Cal Championship on December 6 at Legoland.

SFC’s all-girl robotics team competed at the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) LEGO League  So Cal Championship consisting of three parts of the competition: robotic game and design, research project/solution and assessment of team’s core values. The design portion focused on using a Lego robotic kit to build and program a robot used to complete a series of tasks. The research project requires the team to identify a problem on a specific topic and develop solutions. Finally, the teams are judged on how well they work together while displaying integrity and honesty.

During the course of competition, in addition to looking for place winners, the judges look for teams whose unique efforts, performance or dynamics merit recognition. Some teams have a story that sets them apart in a noteworthy way or is one that the judges choose to give special recognition. SFC’s team, Mission: Robotics, earned the Rising Star award, recognizing that the Judges expect great things from the team in the future.

This talented team comprised of Ruby Belt, Maddie Dearen, Melia Crimaldi, Brianna Volpp, Eden Stambaugh and Angie King enjoyed working alongside their friends and the thrill of the competition. Look for these rising stars to make a great impact at future robotics competitions.
