Santa Fe Christian Schools is honored to present the 2014 Faithful Servant Award to John Couch for his high level of commitment to serve SFC. The award will be presented to Mr. Couch at our 26th Annual Auction & Gala on April 5th at the Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa.
In 1984, Mr. Couch quit his high paying job at Apple and moved his family to Del Mar. He felt he had a higher calling and turned his focus to education at Santa Fe Christian Schools. He enrolled his children at SFC and was asked to join the Board in 1985. Two months later he became Chairman.
As Chairman of the Board, John created a business plan to get SFC out of debt and turn the school into one of the first examples of how the creative use of technology can revolutionize learning in the classroom. Under his leadership SFC became debt-free and the student body grew from 150 to 1000! The school’s rented facilities were expanded via the purchase of the current 17-acre site, offering a range of world-class resources, including a fiber optic network of Macintosh computers.
Mrs. Evelyn Huey, a SFC employee for 35 years, describes John Couch as “a visionary with a purpose. In 1984, John left Apple Computer and a huge salary to serve at SFC. He came with a passion to work for the Lord and believed in Christian education and SFC’s mission. For 10 years he gave 24/7 of his time and effort to SFC and pushed us on and on toward success. He served as SFC’s Chairman of the Board, acting Headmaster, and was a major financial contributor. He was a key figure in purchasing SFC’s property and there is no doubt his vision and leadership led the way to the success we enjoy today.”
Currently, Mr. Couch is Apple’s Vice President of Education and has been responsible for driving Apple’s renewed success in the education market. He has over 40 years experience as a computer scientist, executive, and advocate for technology in education.
