Sixteen-year NBA player and SFC dad Chris Dudley is bringing his skill and experience to the SFC basketball program. Most notably, Dudley played for the Portland Trail Blazers for most of his career, then later, as a New York Knick, played in the NBA finals. Impressed with the leadership of Head Basketball Coach Chad Bickley, Chris was happy to become an assistant coach upon Chad’s request. Chris serves on the Board of Directors for SFC, is a Yale graduate, and ran for governor of Oregon.
Laurie Byrd, women’s professional basketball legend and coach has been directing our girls basketball teams for three years. Recently nominated to the Basketball Hall of Fame, this godly woman is passionate about instilling the importance of bringing excellence and faith in all you do. Now in her third year of coaching at SFC, the varsity girls basketball team, currently 15-5, is making quite an impact in San Diego this season, recently beating two top-10 San Diego teams La Costa Canyon and Bishops.
In addition to both being professional athletes, Coach Byrd and Coach Dudley share the desire to pass on a strong work ethic and a love of the game to young players. Interestingly, both Coach Dudley and Coach Byrd had to overcome different types of adversity. Chris has Type I Diabetes and had to be very dedicated and hardworking in order to play basketball in high school; he didn’t make the varsity team until his senior year. Chris was the first player in the NBA with Type I Diabetes and started the Chris Dudley Foundation to support and encourage diabetic athletes. Laurie is small in stature but never let her 5 foot 6 inch size limit her effectiveness on the court, instead choosing to let her speed, skillful court sense, precise passing and sharp shooting speak for itself.
