Over 140 people were in attendance at SFC Lower School’s first family math night called: MISSION: Math. “We wanted to create an opportunity for the Lower School community to come together and share in a common experience that centered on math,” reported Amanda Walker, Lower School Assistant Principal. “Traditional events, such as Open House, bring parents on campus to view finished and polished work. But we wanted families to come to campus and solve problems and find solutions together.”
There were several goals for the evening, but the most important one was to enjoy doing math. While participating in the activities as a family, the Lower School team hopes students will continue to develop strong number sense, logical thinking, problem-solving strategies and build confidence.
During MISSION: Math, students worked with family and friends in a collaborative effort to solve interactive problems. After each activity, some students were asked to share what strategy they used to solve the problem. “It was interesting to hear the various approaches to solving the same problem,” beamed Amanda Walker.
