Math students compete with the brightest in the state. The Caltech Harvey Mudd Math Competition is a team competition for high school students organized by the Caltech and Harvey Mudd math clubs, and is one of the most prestigious math competitions in the western half of the United States. Santa Fe Christian competes against 46 of the best math teams in the state. WIth three teams comprised of six students each, SFC prepared for this competition by working together as a group to be expert problem solvers. Most of the highest ranking teams at the competition are from “Math Circles.” A Math Circle is a team of six formed by taking the top problem solvers from multiple schools in areas such as San Francisco, San Jose or Orange County. What makes SFC unique is they draw three teams from a student body of only 400 students. These SFC math teams took 24th, 29th and 34th out of the field of 46 teams. Highlights from the competition include freshman Paolo Pasco ranking in the top twenty percent on the individual test and junior Chase Bakkeby ranking in the top twenty-five percent in the competition. The sky is the limit for these young math scholars.
