This last week, Santa Fe Christian had the opportunity to host renowned author and speaker Sean McDowell. McDowell spoke with SFC parents on the unique characteristics of Gen Z and ways parents can share their faith with their kids.
Now that enough research has been conducted on Gen Z, it appears Gen Z is reshaping traditional views on religion. McDowell urged parents to look at this as a positive opportunity to engage. Here are some insights gleaned from McDowell’s talk.
Attitude Toward Faith
- Less Hostility: Unlike previous generations, Gen Z exhibits less antagonism toward religion, often approaching it with indifference or lack of familiarity.
- Cultural Disconnect: Many are unaware of the Christian story, leading to challenges in understanding its societal role.
Faith and Identity
- Low Church Attendance: Despite low church attendance (50% haven’t attended in six months), many still consider faith important.
- Low Priority: However when asked about their identity, religion often ranks low in priority with family, career, and personal interests taking precedence.
Engaging Gen Z
- Model Authentic Faith: Live a joyful, compassionate, and consistent faith to inspire curiosity and interest.
- Build Relationships: Strong, caring connections are crucial for transmitting faith. Authentic mentorship has a lasting impact.
- Encourage Conversations: Create open dialogue, welcome their questions and listen to their perspectives. Share personal stories of your faith and ask your kids good questions.
